How to Convert Tempatures to Metric

The metric unit for temperature is the degree Celsius. In the United States, temperature in everyday life is measured in degrees Fahrenheit. The Celsius scale originally went backward: The smaller the number, the hotter the temperature. But shortly after Celsius scale founder Anders Celsius died, the scale was reversed, so both Celsius and Fahrenheit use larger numbers to represent higher temperatures. The formula for converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius is to subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature and multiply the result by 5 divided by 9.

Instructions

    • 1

Subtract 32 from the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. For example, if the temperature is 46 degrees Fahrenheit, subtract 32 from 46 to get 14.

    • 2

Multiply the result by 5. In this example, multiply 14 by 5 to get 70.

    • 3

Divide the result by 9 to finish the conversion to the metric temperature. Divide 70 by 9 to get 7.78 degrees Celsius.
