How to Convert MBH to Metric

MBH stands for 1,000 BTUs per hour, using the Roman numeral "M" to stand for 1,000. In turn, BTU stands for British thermal unit, and is the amount of energy required to heat 1 lb of water 1º F. The BTU is still in use in certain industries, such as heating and air conditioning systems, but has been largely replaced by the joule, a metric unit of energy, for most scientific purposes. The metric counterpart to the MBH would typically be the kilowatt, which is 1,000 joules per second.

      Multiply the number of MBHs by 293,071. This will give you the approximate number of watts. As an example, if you were converting 5 MBHs to watts, you would arrive at 1,465,355 watts after the multiplication.

      Identify the most appropriate unit of measure that you wish to convert to. If you started out with an extremely small fraction of an MBH, then watts may be an appropriate unit of measure. Generally though, hundreds of thousands of watts is too unwieldy to work with, so you would want to convert the figure to kilowatts or megawatts. If the number of watts is in the thousands, kilowatts might be most appropriate, but if it is in the millions, then megawatts would be a better unit to work with.

      Divide the number of watts by 1,000 to get the number of kilowatts, using either the calculator or simply moving the decimal points three spots to the left. If the result is still too unwieldy, divide it by 1,000 again to get the number of megawatts. In the example used above, 1,465,355 would be converted to 1,465.4 kilowatts, or 1.47 megawatts. In most cases, most of the digits to the right of the decimal point may be dropped, but this will depend on the purpose you are using the figures for.
