How to Convert Fahrenheit to Metric

Americans commonly use the Fahrenheit scale to measure temperature. In contrast, many other countries around the world measure temperature with the metric system's Celsius scale. If you need to convert a temperature in degrees Fahrenheit to the metric equivalent in degrees Celsius, you must follow a simple formula: (F - 32) x 5/9 = C.

Instructions

    • 1

Subtract 32 from the number of degrees Fahrenheit you want to convert. For example, if you have 50 degrees Fahrenheit, subtract 32 to get 18.

    • 2

Multiply the answer from the first step by 5. In this example, you would multiply 5 times 18 to get 90.

    • 3

Divide the product from Step 2 by 9 to find the answer in degrees Celsius. In this example, you would divide 90 by 9 to get 10 degrees Celsius. This means that 50 degrees Fahrenheit is the equivalent of 10 degrees in the metric system.
