How to Use Fractions to Write & Solve a Division Problem

Fractions are all around you. A slice of pizza or pie represents a fraction of the whole pizza or pie. If you are cooking, your recipe may contain fractional measurements. If you want to divide a recipe in half that has fractional measurements, you will need to use fractions to write and solve your division problem. You also may have to divide fractions as a part of a middle school, high school or college math course.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a division problem by dividing a dividend by a divisor. For instance, if you have a recipe that calls for 3/4 cup of water and you want to cut the recipe in half, you would divide 3/4 by 2. You would write the problem as follows: 3/4 ("dividend") / 2/1 ("divisor") = __.

    • 2

Flip the divisor to create a reciprocal fraction. In this example, you would flip 2/1 to create the fraction 1/2.

    • 3

Multiply the dividend by the divisor's reciprocal. In this example, you would multiply 3/4 by 1/2. Multiply the numerators to get 3 and the denominators to get 8. This is the answer to your division problem. Using this example, 3/4 / 2/1 = 3/8.
