Steps for How to Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

Like many properties, multiple units of measure exist for quantifying how hot something is. Two of the scales are degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit. The Celsius scale uses the freezing point of water as zero and the boiling point as 100. The Fahrenheit scale uses the temperature of a salt, water and ice mixture as zero degrees and the freezing point of fresh water as 32 degrees. If you have a temperature measured in Fahrenheit, you may need to convert it to express it in degrees Celsius.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out the formula C = (F - 32) / 1.8. In the formula, F stands for Fahrenheit and C stands for Celsius.

    • 2

Insert the temperature in Fahrenheit for F into the formula. For example, if you have a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, insert 70 for F to get C = (70-32) / 1.8.

    • 3

Simplify the formula to figure out the equivalent temperature in degrees Celsius. In this example, simplify by subtracting 32 from 70 to get 38 and divide 38 by 1.8 to get 21.11 degrees Celsius.
