The metric system, or International System of Units (SI), uses precise measurements to ensure accuracy. The kelvin (K) is the standard unit of temperature in the metric system. The Celsius or centigrade system is also used often in metric measurements and scientific analysis. The kelvin is defined as the point where water exists simultaneously in all three states: solid, liquid and gas. This state is known as the triple point of water and is equal to exactly 273.16 K. The triple point of water in Celsius is 0.01 degrees C. Since a change in temperature in kelvin is the same as the change in temperature in Celsius, 0 degrees C equals exactly 273.15 K. Therefore, to convert kelvins to Celsius, 273.15 must be subtracted from the kelvin temperature to obtain the Celsius or centigrade temperature.

Obtain the initial temperature reading in kelvins. For example, use 311 K.

Convert kelvins to degrees Celsius by subtracting 273.15. So 311 -- 273.15 = 37.85 degrees C. This is roughly average body temperature.

Check your answer using an online converter (see Resources). Click on "Celsius" in the column under "From:" and in the column under "To:" click "kelvin." Type in your temperature in the Celsius form, and the kelvin equivalent will appear under "To:".

Add 273.15 to 37.85 degrees Celsius to verify that you get the original temperature in kelvins.
