How to Make a Paper Lion

Children are fascinated by lions. According to National Geographic, these large cats live primarily in Africa, are strong swimmers and live in groups called Prides. Male lions are also the only cats to grow manes. After learning about lions, students may enjoy making their own paper lions. They can choose whether to create female lions, without manes, or male lions with them.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the basic shapes out of yellow construction paper to create parts of a lion. Use a two-by-three inch rectangle as a body, trace a juice cap to use as a face, and cut out four strips to use as legs. Cut a narrow slightly curved two inch long piece, to use as a tail.

    • 2

Look at a picture of a lion. Glue two legs toward the lower front of the body and two legs towards the rear.

    • 3

Cut a brown circle of construction paper that is a half inch larger than the yellow circle. Place the yellow circle in the center of the brown one. Use a pencil to trace it.

    • 4

Cut the traced circle out of the middle of the yellow one. Be careful not to tear the outer brown ring.

    • 5

Glue inch strips of brown yarn around the brown ring, so that they hang slightly off it. This is the mane. Let the mane dry for an hour. Glue the yellow circle to the upper corner of the body.

    • 6

Place glue on the outer edges of the face and place the mane, so that it surrounds the outer edges. Use a black marker to draw two eyes, a nose, whiskers, and a mouth.

    • 7

Cut a few pieces of yarn about a quarter-inch long. Glue them to the slightly curved end of the tail. Glue the straighter end of the tail to the upper rear-end of the rectangle.
