How to Make Geometric Hearts

Geometric shapes refer to some of the most common and simplest shapes we see everyday. They include circles, squares, rectangles, ovals and triangles. Another common geometric shape is the heart. The key to making a perfectly geometric heart is symmetry. The heart's lack of straight lines causes some difficulty when attempting to make a completely symmetrical geometric shape. Yet, with a simple paper folding technique, you and your children can create perfectly symmetrical geometric hearts with few supplies, and in little time.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a piece of construction paper in half. The way you decide to fold the paper in half does not change anything except the size of the heart. For example, folding the paper width-wise creates a short and wide area to work with. Folding the paper length-wise gives you a long and slender work area.

    • 2

Draw half a heart shape on the folded piece of paper. Start with the depression in the heart shape, beginning at the paper's fold. Bring your pencil up and create the rounded edge to finish out the heart's top. Finally, bring your pencil back down toward the fold to complete the tail.

    • 3

Cut the shape from the construction paper while still folded in half. Start from the tail and cut around. Remove the cut piece of construction paper and unfold. If done properly, you created a symmetrical geometric heart with two identical sides.
