How to Make a Paper Indian Headband

Making Indian headbands is an educational and creative activity for students. This activity can be incorporated into Thanksgiving Day or Native American history curriculum, or just makes an excellent activity to do in art. Children can make their own headbands while learning about the history of American Indians. Paper Indian headbands are simple to make and are appropriate for preschool through elementary age students.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out 1 1/2- to 2-inch-wide strip of construction paper, using a ruler to measure it. This forms the base of the headband. Adjust the headband to fit your head by trying the headband on, adjusting the size and marking the correct size. Fasten the headband with glue or a stapler.

    • 2

Cut out feathers from different colors of construction paper. Fold pieces of construction paper in half and cut out the outline of half a feather along the crease, or use a template. Unfold the cut out feather to reveal a whole feather. Make cuts around the feather to create individual strands on the feather. Add detail to the feather using a marker.

    • 3

Glue the feathers to the headband. Feathers can adorn the back only, front only or all around the headband. Depending on how ornate you want the headband to be, keep adding feathers. Indian chiefs often wore headdresses made from many feathers.

    • 4

Decorate the headband using markers or embellishments. Add a couple of real feathers or glue on some beads. Use markers to draw Native American designs onto the headband.
