Fun Alphabet Learning Card Games

Learning is often more fun when games are involved as teaching tools. Teach young children the alphabet with a variety of games that involve active play and simple tools. These can be played by a whole class full of children, or by one or two at a learning center -- even as an after-dinner family activity. Keep alphabet flash cards handy and you'll have a game at your finger tips.
  1. Guessing Game

    • Students use their bodies to make letters, learning their shapes and getting physical exercise while they are at it. This is a game for four or more students that requires only a set of alphabet cards or flash cards to play. Have a student choose a card and keep it secret from his friends. Now he forms the letter with his hands or body and his friends guess what the letter is.

    Likes and Dislikes

    • Play a game of likes and dislikes as an ice breaker, or to fill time between lessons. Choose a letter and have each student name one thing they like and one they don't that starts with that letter. For instance, for the letter B, a student might say she likes balloons and dislikes beans. This is a game that might be played every day for the first several weeks of school, starting with A and moving toward Z.

    ABC Bingo

    • Bingo usually involved numbers, but it can also be played with letters for an alphabet lesson. Students each get a bingo chart with letters in each box. As you call out random letters, student mark out a box if it contains that letter. Once a student has all of the letters in a row, he calls out "Bingo!" and wins the game. This can be played with upper and lower case letters for higher difficulty, or when teaching students to recognize these letters.

    Charades

    • Pull out your letter flash card and play a fast-paced, active game of charades. Have one child choose a letter, and then start acting out things that start with that letter until someone guesses the letter. Another idea is to turn this into a different kind of game by having the student draw pictures of things that start with the letter until the letter is guessed. Students can work in two groups for this game.
