Infant Alphabet Games

Though it may seem as if they are too young to understand, introducing the alphabet to infants is quite beneficial to their cognitive development. Though infants are not yet able to communicate with words, they are actually soaking up the information they are presented with. Presenting letters to infants makes them more aware of these graphic symbols and better suited to learn more about them as they grow. Use simple activities to instill an awareness of the alphabet.
  1. Alphabet Song

    • Sing the alphabet song with an infant. Sing the traditional version of the song so the baby becomes familiar with the sound of the letters and can relate them to a distinct tune. While singing the song, hold up letter cards or point to the letters on a chart so the infant makes a connection between the names of the letters and their graphic symbols. After singing the traditional version of the song, set the letters of the alphabet to a different tune. Point out the letters using cards or point to them on a chart as you sing the new tune so the baby makes a connection between the new tune and the letters.

    Sort Letters

    • Sort through letters with your infant. If your infant is able to sit unsupported, sit her on the floor; if she needs support, place her in a highchair or another mechanism that will support her. Set out a small pile of letters and tell her they are letters. Look for the letter "A," show it to her and tell her the name. Place the letter on the ground or on the surface of the highchair and then sort through the pile and place all of the other letter "A's" together. Hold up and repeat the name of the letter each time you find one in the pile. This helps your child make a connection between the letter name and the shape of the letter.

    Book Letters

    • Point out letters with your child while reading books. Look through the pages of a children's book, choose a specific letter and point to the chosen letter each time you see it in the book. Say the name of the letter each time you point to it. Ask your child, "Do you see a letter C?" and then tell her you see it and point to where the letter is located on the page.

    Writing Letters

    • Write letters with your infant. State the name of a specific letter and write it on a sheet of paper. Show your baby the letter after you write it and restate the name. Write the letter several times on a piece of paper, hold the paper up and point to each letter and say its name as you point to each one. This constant repetition helps your child make a greater connection with letters.
