Alphabet Day Ideas

Preschoolers learn to recognize upper and lowercase letters. The U.S. Department of Education says that children who begin school already knowing many letters of the alphabet have an easier time learning to read. Using "alphabet day" ideas helps preschoolers recognize letters and their sounds, giving them a head start on reading.
  1. Food

    • Help children learn the alphabet and try new foods. Each day, focus on a new letter. Talk about different foods that begin with that letter. Taste a few different foods and discuss which ones were best. After a few days, combine some of the favorites from the past few days to make a complete lunch. Discuss the foods and which letter each one represents.

    Animals

    • Young children enjoy animals. Associating each letter of the alphabet to an animal will help them learn. Spend one day per letter talking about animals that begin with each letter. After you have made it through the 26 days of letters, take a trip to the zoo. Talk about each animal, the letter it starts with and the letter sound.

    Songs

    • Compose a song for each letter. Children learn well with music and easy rhymes. The song can include the letter, the sound it makes and different items that begin with the letter. Combine a little dance or movement to act out the song. Continue to review the old songs as you introduce new letters and their songs.

    Art

    • Children can learn to recognize the shape of letters through simple crafts and art projects. Coloring pages, finger paint and clay can help them recognize and create letters. Work on a different letter each day with a new craft.
