Bulletin Board Ideas for Letter Recognition

Students in preschool and kindergarten work on letter recognition skills. Students must be able to recognize all upper- and lowercase letters before they can fully tackle learning to read. Letter recognition bulletin boards can help students learn each letter shape and its sound in preparation for learning to read. Students who successfully master these skills are on their way to becoming successful readers.
  1. Identifying Letters

    • Order the letters in sequence, capital letters followed by the lowercase letters. Point at the letters on the bulletin board as you have the children sing their ABCs and other alphabet learning songs. Ask the students to copy the shapes of the letters on paper. Have the students match cutout letter shapes to the letters on the bulletin board.

    Connecting Letters

    • Scatter the capital and lowercase letters across the bulletin board. Each day, use yarn to connect one uppercase letter to its corresponding lowercase letter. Provide companion worksheets with scattered letter pairs in pocket sleeves that students can work on in class or at home to practice matching uppercase and lowercase letters.

    Alpha Match

    • Use animal letter figures to border the bulletin board. In the center of the bulletin board, place pictures of items that begin with easily recognized similar sounds. For example, pair "apple" and "ant," not "apple" and "ape" or "ace." Use a pointer to point to a letter on the alphabet border and have students find items that start with the same beginning sound.

    Letter Art

    • Provide worksheets for students to complete using alphabet-shaped animals and objects. You may also include incomplete alphabet shapes where students follow dots or broken lines to complete the letter shape. Letters on the bulletin board can assist students in completing the worksheets. Put some of the completed artwork that matches the letter of the week up on the bulletin board.

    Names and Faces

    • Obtain individual pictures of students. Put up only the letters that match the beginning letters of students' first names. Group student pictures under the appropriate letter. Add your picture to the board under the appropriate letter. After the students learn the names of their teacher and classmates, add pictures of other important school personnel (for example, the principal, the janitor and the school nurse), so that children learn not only to recognize the beginning letter sounds, but also to recognize people in the school.

    Letter Grids

    • Create a grid three boxes high and three boxes wide on the bulletin board. Put one letter in each box and reserve the remaining letters for another week. Have children look through magazines, newspapers and other disposable print media with pictures. Have them cut out pictures of items that begin with any of the nine grid letters. Put the pictures in the appropriate box. When students have mastered all nine letters, remove the letters and pictures from the bulletin board and start over with nine new letters.
