Create a bulletin board where you post students' artwork for display in the classroom. This bulletin board will stay basically the same throughout the year, while you switch out the artwork for each unit. Divide the bulletin board into squares. At the bottom of each square, print the child's name and post a picture of the child next to it. This will help the children to learn to recognize their names and show off their work to their parents.
Create a bulletin board to show off the letters, colors and numbers you are focusing on for the month. The background could stay a solid white, or it can change to match the color of the month. On the bulletin board, display the letter and number you are focusing on for the week. You can extend this by showing an object that starts with the letter you are focusing on and then putting up enough pictures to match the number you are featuring. For example, if your letter is F and your number is six, you can put up six pictures of fish. You can extend it to include the color as well.
Create bulletin boards to match the units you are teaching in your class. For example, if you are teaching about community workers, you can post pictures of different community workers on the bulletin board and label them to expose the children to the words. For a unit on the sea, create a beach scene showing both the underwater animals and plants and the creatures that live on the beach.
One important concept to teach in a prekindergarten setting is the passage of time and the days of the week. Set up a calendar bulletin board for the students to use every day. Have students put up the date each day. The students could practice writing the numbers with a dry erase marker on a laminated calendar, or you can put the numbers on a card that they tape to the calendar. Talk about the seasons as you experience them, and change the bulletin board with the seasons. Discussion of the weather can also be incorporated into this bulletin board.
