Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, a whimsical alphabet story by Bill Martin Jr., follows letters up and down a coconut tree and is a big hit with young kids. After reading this story, have the kids make coconuts of themselves to display on this board from The Virtual Vine. Line your board with yellow butcher paper or fabric. For the coconut tree, cut a trunk out of brown butcher paper, then cut some palm fronds out of green butcher paper and attach both to the board. Each child will get a cutout of a coconut to decorate. If possible, have them bring in a wallet-sized photo of themselves to glue in the center of the coconut, then attach those to your board. You can also decorate the tree with colorful letters of the alphabet that the kids decorate, then title the board, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Look Who Is In Our Room!"
Help your kids show off some of the things they're learning with this bulletin board idea with an underwater theme. For an underwater look, line your board with blue butcher paper, then cover the whole thing with clear plastic wrap. Create an open treasure chest out of construction paper or butcher paper and place that near the bottom of your board. Along the bottom, about 6 to 7 inches from the bottom edge, you'll want to add "sand" made from manila drawing paper and staple that to the board as well. Have a cutout of a scuba diver available for each child to decorate. When they're done, attach them to your board titled, "We're Diving Into Pre-Kindergarten!" You can add other underwater creatures to fill in the empty space, too, such as fish, an octopus, jellyfish, or a star fish. If you want, you can staple a fishing net to the board to cover part of it.
Show visitors to your room just how special you think your Pre-Kindergarten students are with this board idea from Miss Renee's Kindergarten Pad. You can decorate the background of the board any color you like and add a matching border. You'll add some stars made of construction paper, ribbons, die-cut trophies and anything else that says "special" to you. Kids can use a paper plate to make a face that represents themselves. They'll need crayons and markers to draw on facial features and they can use yarn to glue on "hair." Lay a piece of construction paper lengthwise in front of each child, then help them glue the paper plate head to the top of the piece of paper which will serve as clothes for their person. They may also want to trace their hand prints on paper, cut them out (they'll need help with this) and glue them to the construction paper body. You can then add these to your bulletin board titled, "We Are Special."
