Bulletin Board Ideas for Transitioning to Kindergarten

Transitioning to kindergarten is a big deal for preschoolers. Children become comfortable in their environment in preschool, and moving to a new classroom and possibly a new school can be very intimidating. Classroom bulletin boards are a great way to communicate to preschoolers and to ease their fears of this transition to kindergarten . Using bright colors on the bulletin board and invoking personal touches about each child will keep them interested in it.
  1. Watch Them Grow

    • It's important to communicate to children moving from preschool to kindergarten that this is part of their growth process. The "Watch Them Grow" bulletin board is a great way to do just that. The focal point of this board is a large tree. Create the background of the board to look like a blue sky, and draw bushy green grass along the bottom of the board. Use brown construction paper to form a tree trunk and long branches, and use green construction paper to make the leaves of the tree. Cut out apples or oranges, and write each child's name on a piece of "fruit." If you have a picture, you can include their picture as well. Attach the pieces of fruit to the tree, and something like, "Miss Smith's Preschoolers Have Grown Into Kindergarteners!"

    What You'll Learn

    • Another important point to make with preschoolers is that they are going to learn all kinds of new and exciting things in kindergarten. Create a bulletin board listing all of the different skills they will acquire in kindergarten, and include pictures. For instance, they will learn to read, you can draw pictures of them reading books. They will learn to add, so you can make cut outs of large numbers. If you have room, you can even make another picture of what these skills may mean to them as they get older. For instance, show a child adding numbers, and then a picture of an engineer adding numbers next to a space shuttle.

    The Places They'll Go

    • Model this bulletin board after the famous Dr. Seuss book "Oh, The Places You'll Go." Give the children a worksheet to fill out describing what they want to be when they grow up. Make little cars or buses with each child's picture driving a car, and their future job listed on the outside of the car. Make the bulletin board resemble a long winding road, and list each stage of school along the road, starting with preschool and kindergarten, and ending with college. Attach each child's car to the board. Write the title of the bulletin board, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" at the top of the board.
