Alphabet Learning Games for Kindergarten

Learning the letters of the alphabet is an important first step in learning how to read. One way that children learn is through play, so why not combine learning the letters of the alphabet with games? Here are some fun games that will help kindergartners recognize the letters of the alphabet.
  1. Alphabet Recognition Game

    • Place large alphabet letters all over the floor of the classroom. You can use either plastic ones or make some out of paper. Split the students into two groups and line them up side by side. Call out a letter and have the student at the front of each line race to find the letter. Whoever finds the letter first wins a point for their team. At the end of the game, whoever has the most points wins.

    Hanging Out the Alphabet

    • Tie a clothesline between two chairs. Take a set of alphabet flashcards and mix them up. If you do not have a flashcards, then write the letters on index cards. Give each child a few of the cards and some clothespins. Have them work together to hang the alphabet cards in the right order on the line. If the children have difficulty, refer them to the alphabet that is posted in your room, or help them by asking, "Who has the letter 'A'?" until they literally get the hang of it.

    Alpha-Vision

    • In this game, the child tries to guess which letter he is holding without looking. Use alphabet letters that can be identified by touch and are not just written on cards. Blindfold the first player, have another child choose a letter and put it in his hands. The child tries to guess by the feel of the letter. If the child gets stuck, the other child can give clues such as, "It is the letter that begins the word cat."

    March Around the Alphabet

    • Before class, write the letters of the alphabet on large index cards or card stock paper. Spread them out in a circle on the floor. Have students walk around the letters while you play music. When the music stops, everyone freezes and picks up the letter they are standing next to. Then call on the students one by one to tell you what letter they are holding.
