Learning Games for Kindergarten Kids

Kindergarten students encounter new expectations in a structured environment. Teachers and parents support their young learners who acquire academic skills and reach developmental milestones. Play activities such as learning games are effective teaching strategies for kindergarten students. The ability to engage in play is an active component of a kindergarten student's behavioral repertoire. Teachers use games to teach new skills and reinforce previously mastered skills.
  1. Letter Matching Games

    • Kindergarten students match letters with the help of a chubby snowman. An upper-case letter is printed on the snowman's middle section in the wintry letter matching game. Students select a matching lower-case letter printed on the snowman's hat. The snowmen can be used to spell words

"If You Give a Moose a Muffin" provides the inspiration for this matching game. An upper-case letter is printed above a moose's head. Three muffins containing a lower-case letter present the opportunity to correctly match the upper case letter. Students place a clothes pin on the correct selection.

    Science Game

    • Teach kindergarten students the life cycle of a sunflower. Each student receives a long card that exhibits a sunflower's life cycle in four black and white pictures. Place small color pictures that correspond to the long card face down on a table. Instruct your students to select a card to place on their long playing card. A student who chooses an additional card that is already in her possession must return it the table. The first student who obtains every card needed to match the pictures on the long playing card wins.

    Coloring Matching Game

    • Kindergarten students help a cat locate three lost shoes. The game can be played by one student or by a group. Give each student a playing card depicting Pete the Cat wearing one colored shoe. Place the shoe cards face down on a table. The students search for matches by turning over the shoe cards. The winner finds and correctly matches Pete's shoes.

    Penny, Nickel and Dime Game

    • Kindergarten students use plastic money and a die to explore the value of pennies, nickels and dimes. The student rolls a die and receives the number of pennies matching the roll. The pennies are exchanged for a nickel after at least five pennies are earned. Nickels are exchanged for dimes. The winner accrues an amount of money preset by the teacher.
