Free Learning Games for Kindergarten

Kindergartners enjoy playing games whenever they can. You can combine their love for games and their need for education with a learning game. Learning games enhance different skills and let students learn while playing a fun game. If you are on a low budget and do not have enough money to buy things for the children to play and learn with, you can play one of hundreds of free learning games.
  1. I Spy

    • I Spy is a game that the entire class can play that involves learning to recognize colors in everyday objects. To play I Spy, have all of the students either sit in their seats or on the floor. Choose a student to go first and tell him to find a color on an object somewhere in the room and not tell anybody what the object is. Tell the class that the student who chose the object will say the color of the object and they have to guess what the object is. Let each student have a turn at guessing until someone guesses correctly. Then, that student would get to choose an object for everyone to guess.

    Sound Mimic

    • The sound mimic game is one way to enhance the students' ability to mimic sounds, make music and work well with others. Give each of the children an instrument. If you do not have instruments available, the students can play on the table like it is a drum. The game involves letting a student make sounds on the instrument or table. Rotate around the room, letting each student try to mimic the sounds on her instrument or table, until someone mimics it correctly. At that point, that student would get to make her own sounds for everyone to try to mimic.

    Simon Says

    • Simon Says is a game that can teach kindergarten students how to follow directions and listen closely. To play, stand up in front of the class and have the students either sit in their seats or stand up, depending on what Simon will be saying and if you have the extra space. The object is to have the students repeat what you say to do, only after you say "Simon says." You can try to throw them off by having Simon telling them to do things fast and then not saying "Simon says." The students that still do what you say, even though you did not say "Simon says," are eliminated. Have the children do different actions that will give them exercise. Keep playing until there is a winner.

    Ball and Music Game

    • The ball and music game can teach students to follow directions, work on their listening skills and develop hand-eye coordination. The game is played with a radio and a ball and is a lot like a game of "hot potato." The object is to turn on the radio and have the students toss the ball to each other. When you turn the radio off, the student who has the ball is eliminated from the game. You can also have a responsible student control the radio while he looks away from the students. This will solve any problems of students thinking the radio was turned off on them on purpose. You can turn away, but someone needs to watch the class. The student can have fun with this hands-on game that will help them to work with others. If you do not have a radio and a ball, you can sing and use an any object other than the ball.
