Tag Games for Kindergarten

Tag is a classic game that enables kindergarten students to develop their gross motor skills and exert any pent-up energy they may have. Choose from several variations of the game to engage your students and keep them active and entertained.
  1. Handkerchief Tag

    • In this variation of tag, children try to snag their classmates' handkerchiefs. Provide each of your students with a handkerchief or a piece of fabric and instruct them to place it in their back pockets. On your mark, children run around, trying to remove the handkerchiefs from the pockets of their classmates. If a student's handkerchief is snatched, he must sit out of the game. The last student left standing wins this game of tag.

    Line Tag

    • In this game, students who are tagged join forces to form a line and try to tag their classmates. One student is randomly selected to be "it." On your mark, students scatter and instead of sitting out, the first person that is tagged links arms with "it" and the pair run together, trying to tag another student. Each student that is tagged links arms with the students that have previously been tagged. The game continues until the last student is caught and this student act as "it" in the next round of the game.

    Fox and Sheep Tag

    • One student is selected to act as the fox in this game and the rest of the players act as the sheep. The sheep stand on one side of a room and the fox stands in the middle of the room. The fox shouts out different times and when he says "midnight," the sheep run from one side of the room to the other. While the sheep are running, the fox tries to tag them and each sheep that is tagged is out of the game. Those students who safely make it to the other side of the room play another round of the game. The game continues until there is one sheep remaining -- this child is the winner of the game and acts as the fox in the next round.

    Freeze Tag

    • As the name suggests, children must freeze in place when they are caught in this version of tag. Ask a student to volunteer to be "it." On your mark, she chases her classmates. As "it" tags students, they must stop moving and remain in the exact position they were tagged in. Frozen players may become unfrozen if another student taps them. The student who is "it" must try to freeze all of her classmates and the last person frozen acts as "it" in the next game.
