Games for Identifying Alphabets

One of the first academic lessons we teach our children is to identify the letters of the alphabet. This is essential for children, as learning the alphabet is the foundation to learning how to read. Teach your child to recognize letters of the alphabet by using fun games and activities.
  1. Alphabet Hunt

    • Create an alphabet hunt. Take several pieces of colored construction paper and cut out 26 ovals, for the eggs. Label each egg with a letter of the alphabet and decorate if desired. Hide the eggs around a room or backyard and instruct the child to find the eggs. After finding the eggs, review each letter of the alphabet along with its sound. Extend the activity by helping the child spell out simple words with the eggs such as car or hat.

    Looking for Letters

    • On a nice day, take your child outside for a walk in the neighborhood. While you are walking, point out various letters on signs, windows or car license plates. After the walk, take an old magazine and let the child find some of the letters he learned while walking. Extend the activity by having the child create an alphabet collage with cut out letters of the alphabet and by using various decorations such as glitter, markers, crayons and beads.

    Alphabet Old Maid

    • Gather a few children, at least three, to play alphabet Old Maid. Using small index cards create two sets of alphabet cards, including one blank card. Shuffle and deal the cards to the children. Each player first picks up his hand, holding the cards so the other players cannot see the hand. The player then checks his hand for any pairs and sets the pairs aside. The first player turns to the player on his left and takes a card. If the card is a match, the player places the pair on the table. Continue the game until one player holds only the blank card and becomes the “old Maid.”

    Upper and Lower Case

    • Using index cards, create two sets of alphabet cards, one set with the uppercase letters and the other set with the lower case letters. Mix the cards so they are out of order and place the cards face up on a smooth surface such as the table or floor. Instruct the child to match the uppercase letters with the lowercase letters.
