Edible Alphabet Activities for Kindergarten

The kindergarten curriculum should include activities that are not only attractive to young learners, but are also accommodating for divergent learning styles. Kindergarten children will eagerly participate in edible learning activities that provide a multisensory experience. An edible alphabet activity will captivate the attentional focus and the taste buds of kindergarten children.
  1. Cereal and Graham Cracker Activity

    • Provide your children with alphabet cereal, graham crackers, jelly, honey and plastic knives. Ask the children to select either jelly or honey to spread on the graham crackers. Demonstrate how to place the letters that spell the children's names on top of their jelly or honey. Reinforce letter recognition skills by asking your children to place designated letters on their graham crackers.

    Marshmallow Alphabet Activity

    • Present an edible activity that is soft, squishy and delicious by making letters with colored marshmallows. Provide Styrofoam, toothpicks and colored marshmallows. Write a letter on the Styrofoam. Demonstrate to your children how to place toothpicks along the letters. Place the toothpicks approximately 1 inch apart on the letters. Show the children how to place a marshmallow on each toothpick until the letter is formed.

    Letter Sculpture Activity

    • Scholastic.com recommends letting your students mix an edible dough to sculpt yummy letters. Have the children wash their hands before mixing 1 cup of smooth peanut butter with 1 cup of powdered milk and 1/2 cup of honey. Demonstrate how to knead the ingredients together. Divide the dough and let the children form letters and words. Provide colored sprinkles and chocolate chips for decorating the letters. Allow the children's letter creations to chill in the refrigerator for one hour.

    Grilled Cheese Activity

    • A favorite sandwich and alphabet cookie cutters will transform your students' lunches into a tasty learning activity. Enlist the help of your school's cafeteria to prepare the sandwiches or send a note to parents requesting a grilled cheese sandwich for a specific day. Show the children how to place the cookie cutter in the center of the sandwich and then press down firmly. Lift the cookie cutter and tap the top gently to dislodge the sandwich.
