Thanksgiving Writing Activities for Kindergarten

Writing activities for kindergarten students are an ideal way to teach Thanksgiving words and themes. The writing activities can focus on the holiday itself, its history or getting children to think about what they are grateful for. These activities will also teach children letters, letter sounds and words. When the words are repeatedly shown to the children, they may even memorize them and be able to recognize them in other contexts.
  1. Printable Pages

    • Many sites on the Internet offer free pages of printable activities for Thanksgiving. Kindergarten children can learn the basic words related to the holiday, such as Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, pumpkins, thank you and turkey. You can find printable pages in which the word is written out that include a space for the children to either trace it or copy it. Many of these pages have pictures on them as well for the children to color. This can help them remember the word while they work on the page.

    Word Walls

    • The week before Thanksgiving, create a word wall. This simply involves writing words related to Thanksgiving on cards and taping them or sticking them to a bulletin board or wall. Ask the children first to identify the letters that they recognize on the wall. Move on to identifying the words and then writing them down with assistance, if they need it.

    Thanksgiving Book

    • Ask the children to create a book about Thanksgiving. Prepare the books by folding pieces of paper in half and stapling the centers together. The book could include facts about Thanksgiving or what the children are grateful for. Help the children write a simple sentence on the bottom of each page. They can then draw a picture that illustrates what the sentence is about.

    Letter Themes

    • Choose a different letter each day and ask the children to come up with items related to Thanksgiving that start with that letter. Write all of the words down. Ask the children to write the word as well and then draw a picture of the word. This will help teach the children letter sounds as well as how to write each letter.

    Thankful Crafts

    • Have the children create a wreath out of leaf shapes, a tree with leaves on it or a turkey with tail feathers cut from construction paper. On each leaf or feather have the children write what they are thankful for. Give them ideas, such as family, friends, food, etc., and help them write the words if necessary. This type of craft makes a great Thanksgiving table centerpiece as well. The children could then ask their families at Thanksgiving what they are grateful for.
