Fun Moon Games

Games can play an important role in helping your homeschoolers to have more fun and retain more information while participating in your unit on the moon. It is amazing how much more children learn about things that seem distant, such as the moon, when knowledge is made applicable to daily life through playful education.
  1. Spaceship Explorers

    • Get your homeschoolers excited about the moon unit by making them feel like they are explorers in space. Cut out stars and a giant moon from white paper and then paint them with glow-in-the-dark paint. Allow the paint to dry and then hang them on the ceiling. Turn out the lights and ask the kids to pretend they are in space and about to take the very first step on the moon.

    Moon Trivia Fun

    • Use index cards to create trivia cards that can be used in a fun game that will help your homeschoolers to learn about the moon. On one side of the index card, write a question pertaining to the moon. On the other side of the index card, write the answer. Create a board game and use pennies as game pieces. Every time a child answers a question correctly, he moves to the next square. If a child answers incorrectly answer a question, he moves backwards a square. The first person to reach the end of the game board wins the game.

    Race to the Moon

    • Ask a local community center if you can use their gymnasium to set up an obstacle course for your kids. Set up gym mats and tires that they can race and jump over as the leave earth's atmosphere, and a slide they climb up and go down in order to land on the moon's surface. Talk about what these obstacles represent with your homeschoolers. The first child to reach the end of the obstacle course and correctly identify all of the obstacles from memory wins the game.

    Crafty Moon Fun

    • Gather paper plates, cream cheese, and slices of Swiss cheese. Ask your children to use the cream cheese to "glue" the Swiss cheese to the paper plates, simulating the surface of the moon. Spend time talking about why the moon has craters and then let the kids enjoy eating their moon creations with whole wheat crackers.
