How to Calculate How Fast You Need to Run

If you are running a race, you may want to know how fast you need to run to make it in a certain time. In order to perform this calculation, you need to know the formula for speed. The physics formula is distance divided by time. The most common speed calculation is miles per hour. Here, you would divide the distance run by the time it took to run it. With simple algebra, you can manipulate this formula to solve for time, speed or distance.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the time you need to reach. For example, assume you are running a marathon you want to run it in under two hours.

    • 2

Find the length of the event you are running. In the example, assume it is 15 miles.

    • 3

Divide the miles of your event by the time you want. In the example, 15 miles divided by two hours equals a speed of 7.5 miles per hour you need to run.
