Teacher Created Bulletin Board Ideas for K-4

Bulletin boards are an important part of a school's atmosphere. They add interest, color, warmth and information to what could otherwise be a rather sterile environment, particularly for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. Designed with everything from a holiday focus to a curricular theme, bulletin boards are put together to enhance your young students' school experience.
  1. Time Around the World

    • Watch students pause and ponder the time differences around the world.

On a board lined with navy blue or forest green paper, staple a large map of the world. Purchase four analog clocks. Set one clock for your time of the day. Fasten this clock above your area of the map and label with your city's name. Calculate the time difference for three other cities throughout the world and display these times of each clock. Place each clock above the area on the map in which each city is located. Label each clock for the city it is representing.

    Different Fish Swimming Together

    • Embrace diversity using an interesting metaphor.

Students add their own artistic touches to this bulletin board by designing creative sea creatures. Give a group of students a sheet of sturdy, while paper. Ask each student to draw, color and cut out an animal of the sea. They must include their names on their creations. With a bulletin board lined in light blue, fasten the words "We Are All Different Fish But We Swim Together Here." Staple the sudents' creations throughout the space to help illustrate the theme.

    Spring

    • A play on words adds a little humor to a bulletin board.

Celebrate the excitement in the air that comes with spring time. On a bulletin board lined in blue or green, fasten the words "We're So EGGcited About Springtime, We're Quacked Up". Help the words "Eggcited" and "Quacked" stand out by using a color that contrasts with the rest of the sentence. Staple the same number of baby ducks on the board as there are students in the class. Students add their creative touches to this board by decorating paper Easter eggs made from oval cuts of white paper. Each student's egg should be cut in half with a zig zag pattern and stapled near one of the baby ducks.

    Welcome Back

    • Students will enjoy finding their own name on this bulletin board display.

When returning to school in the fall, students take ownership of their classroom more quickly when they find their names posted in a variety of places. Line a bulletin board in black paper. Create the words "Welcome Back" in yellow and fasten them to the board. Draw a large space ship on white paper with black accent lines. Staple this space ship pointing downward, as though returning to Earth. Fasten one yellow star to the board for each student in your class. Write each student's name on her own star.
