Celebrations of book month can include a display of book jackets of popular titles for the grade's reading level. Students can compile a list of book titles the class reads over a period of one month and make them into a graph. A separate chart can indicate fiction or nonfiction books and articles. At the month's end, a pie chart can indicate the subject areas, such as hobbies, biographies, poetry, sports, novels or science.
The theme of metamorphosis can include animals native to your region. The bulletin board can display drawings or paintings of the animals in their various stages of development plus a list of stages of growth. Illustrations of your community's habitats can provide a backdrop. Another metamorphosis activity can include a three-part series of portraits of each student. Students bring an early photo of themselves, pose for a current photo and draw self-portraits of how they think they will look 10 years from now. Other images can include what life may be like for the student in 10 years. For example a nine-year old who envisions life as a nineteen-year old can draw a futuristic vehicle or a new school or home.
A nutrition theme can include a visual meal planning menu for seven days. For example, a grade four class's entry for Monday can illustrate whole grain cereal, milk, egg, fruit for breakfast plus cheese and grapes for snacks. Images can include drawings, collage or magazine cut-outs of food items. Each child can make a large nutritional data chart based on the United States Food and Drug Administration model for a specific food item and list the calories, vitamins, minerals and other data. Students can cut out positive words from construction paper, such as "energy" or "vitality," and attach them to the board.
Students can make recreational facilities or health facilities the stars of their bulletin board. For example, a grade three class can showcase a renovated swimming pool by including drawings and pool facts. A grade five class can focus on a new medical center and compile drawings of exterior views plus lists of treatments or services provided. A bulletin board theme on a trip to the local bird sanctuary can include drawings of a map, bird species and the visitors center plus a listing of activities offered by the sanctuary. A photograph of the bulletin board and a letter of appreciation by the students can be sent to the facility.
