The background of the board can introduce the concept to the children in the class. Make the background of the board green or brown, or you can make the bulletin board look like a swamp with trees on the sides and a swamp in the middle of the board. Use a brown or green border, or you can purchase a swamp theme boarder with alligators or other swamp plants and animals. Title the board with the name of the specific swamp you want to study or just "Swamps."
Have children research and draw a picture of their favorite swamp animal. Add the animals to the board in the location in which they actually live. For example, swamp birds could be placed in the swamp water or nearby in the trees. Alligators would go in the water or on the shore. Fish would go in the water. Use the animals found in the specific swamp the class is studying or general swamp animals.
There are a wide variety of plants available in a swamp. If possible, visit a local swamp and have the students collect their favorite plant from the swamp and use it on the board. If your location does not have any swamps, then you can have the children research the plants just as they did for the animals. Have the children place the plants on the board and label them correctly. Staple or glue the pictures in place on the board.
You can also choose a theme for the swamp bulletin board. Choose a theme such as animals of the swamp, plants of the swamp, ecosystem of the swamp, purpose of the swamp or even weather systems of the swamp. You can also make a theme for a specific swamp study. Use what other subjects you study in class to act as a guide for how to make a theme for the swamp bulletin board.
