How to Format ACM References

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is an organization with many active members and a wide variety of pertinent publications working to promote professionals in the computer and communications workforce. This organization also requires a clear, consistent citation style when formatting ACM references. As with any writing or presentation style, clear citation and formatting of the references you use is a crucial piece of professional communication skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a bibliography page at the end of your essay or presentation where you will place the formatted ACM references. Place the title "References" centered at the top of the page.

    • 2

Format an ACM reference for a book with a single author. List the author's last name, followed by their first initial, the year of publication, the title of the book in italics, the city and state of publication. For example:

Smith, J. 2000. Title. Publishers Inc, Chicago, IL.

For a book with two authors, start with the last name followed by the first initial of the first author, followed by any other authors with their first initial followed by their last name. For example:

Smith, J, S. Doe and J. Doe. 1998. Title. Publishers, Chicago, IL.

Remember to put the title of the work in italics. Always indent any line after the first line of the citation.

    • 3

Format a reference for an article in a published work, such as a journal. Begin with the author's last name and then first initial, the year of publication, the title of the article, the title of the journal in italics, the editors of the journal, the publisher of the journal, place of publication and the page numbers for the article. For example:

Smith, J. Thinking. 2008. In Journal Title, R. Editor Eds., Publishing Press, Anytown, US, 24-60.

Remember that the journal title will be in italics.

    • 4

Format a reference from a conference presentation by listing the author's last name and first initial, the year of publication, the title of the talk, the title of the conference in italics, the location and year of the conference, the editors of the conference, place of publication and the pages. For example:

Smith, J. Thinking about Topics. 2008. In The Conference on Computing, Anytown, US, 2008, H. Joe Ed., Another Town, US, 288-300.

Remember to put the title of the conference in italics and indent the second line.

    • 5

Organize the references in alphabetical order according the last names of the authors. Ensure that all titles are in the correct format with all correct italics and indentations present.
