Obtain at least 2,000 hours of hands-on experience regarding the care and custody of steam boilers and related equipment exceeding 15-pounds-per-square-inch. Alternatively, enroll for a state-approved training course of at least 75 hours, thereby cutting down the experience requirement to just 1,000 hours. You may also apply if you possess either a high-pressure boiler license with 500 hours of operating experience. Finally, document all work or course experience as documentation is a requirement when you apply.
Write to receive the application form by filling in your full name, country of residence, current address, area code as well as telephone number to the Bureau of Licensing. Alternatively, call (800) 686-1524 and request an "Examiners of Steam Engineers Application and Certification of Experience" form. Ensure that you provide all your residence details for the same.
Fill out the application form by indicating the type of license you are applying for, applicant information and experience. Fill out boiler information if experience hours involved working with a boiler, and turbine type if it involved experience with turbines. Also fill in the "license held" column with previous, active licenses that you possess.
Verify experience gained. This involves signing and notarizing the experience you have by an already licensed steam engineer who vouches for your experience under him. It must be sent as a letter to the superintendent.
Sign and notarize your application form before sending it to the Bureau of Licensing. Also, include two recent passport-size photographs with the application.
Pay an application fee of $50 made out to the Treasurer, State of Ohio.
Pay an examination fee of $75 at the exam site on the day of the exam.
Pass the Steam Engineers Examination with a score of 75 percent or above. The syllabus for the exam includes knowledge on steam boilers, steam turbines, safe operation, environmental controls, etc., among other topics. More information can be obtained from the "body of knowledge" website of the Ohio Department of Commerce.
Pay a license fee of $35 on passing the examination. This fee enables you to get the actual license.
