How to Take the NCLEX

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing gives the Nursing Licensing Examination or NCLEX. To qualify for the NCLEX, you must successfully complete nursing courses. There are two types of examinations, NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN, given to registered nursing (RN) candidates and practical nursing (PN) candidates. This is a multiple-choice exam, given on a computer program, taken at an official testing location. The cost to take this test is $200. Your examination will cover a vast array of nursing topics; successful completion will require planning and practice.

      Develop a Study Plan. It is important to take the examination within six months of your graduation from nursing school. You should find a study partner who is familiar with the material. Use flash cards and other tools to assist with your studies. Remember, don't over study information that you already know, concentrate on uncertain items until you're more comfortable. Additionally, don't forget to take the practice exams.

      Get Adequate Rest. You will need a well-rested mind to do your best on the exam. Don't overstress yourself with anxiety. Practice relaxation and anxiety management skills. Avoid overloading on sugar and caffeine that will cause a crash later. Concentrate only on the exam, doing too many things will increase your stress level and you will not be able to function at your full potential. Remember to talk positively to yourself, tell yourself often that you will ace the exam.

      Remember the Key Points. First is patient safety, everything in nursing revolves around the patient. Your answers on the exam will also focus on what is best for the patient. You will have to assess the patient before implementing and answering the question. In addition, it is important to prioritize, the key words are most, first, best and initial. Lastly, imprint the five rights of medication administration permanently in your mind. You will need to know this on the exam and in your daily nursing duties.

      Prepare for the test. You should know exactly where the testing site is prior to the day of the exam. Estimate the time it will take you to get to the location with traffic. Make sure you arrive early and fully prepared for the exam. The NCLEX is approximately 265 questions for the RN test and 205 questions for the PN test. However, after 75-85 questions, the computer will assess your performance compared to the average passing student. If you are failing or exceeding the exam, the computer will shut off early and the test will be over. You can expect to receive your results after a month from the board of nursing.
