How to Study for the Nclex Exam

If you want to become a registered nurse (RN) you must successfully pass the NCLEX exam. This computer-based exam tests your knowledge and skills in several practice areas including: infection control, environment-coordinated safety protocol, psychosocial integrity, physiological care, and a host of other nursing topics. The exam can contain up to 265 questions, depending on how well you perform in each section. Extensive preparation is recommended in order to pass the NCLEX exam the first time.

      Review sample NCLEX examination questions. Use NCLEX examination study guides and books to become comfortable with the types and style of questions that will be on the exam. Knowing in advance what will be on the exam can help you get through each section more easily.

      Study core concepts in adult physiological integrity. A good portion of the NCLEX exam focuses on principles of adult physiological integrity. Topics include: the nervous system; the gastrointestinal system; the respiratory system; the endocrine system; oncology; and HIV/AIDS.

      Learn the principles of pediatric physiological integrity. This portion of the NCLEX exam focuses on physiological concepts related to the newborn, infant, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Topics to focus on in this area also pertain to children and families with special needs.

      Study core subjects in health promotion and maintenance. All registered nurses taking the NCLEX exam must have knowledge of areas such as growth and development, nutrition at all stages of life, and maternal and child health.

      Learn the principles of psychosocial integrity. Questions pertaining to this area of the NCLEX exam include psychiatric disorders, psychopharmacology, and basic concepts of psychiatric nursing and assessment.

      Study topics on creating a safe care environment for patients. Several questions on the NCLEX exam are centered around principles of creating a safe and effective care environment for children and adults. You will also need to learn key principles of perioperative nursing, and legal, ethical and professional issues related to the healthcare facility.

      Take several practice NCLEX exams. Taking mock examinations and reviewing your results will help you prepare for the final examination; take the time to complete practice exams and tests for each section so you know where your strengths and weaknesses are.
