Begin studying for the exam 6 months ahead of time. Set aside at least 5 hours per week to study.
Read books about India's constitution, history, economic structure, scientific breakthroughs and current affairs every day.
Read journals such as Yojana, Kurukshetra and World Focus; newspapers such as The Hindu, The Times of India and The Economic Times; and magazines such as Frontline. Try to read one of these sources every day.
Enroll in English language classes if your English could use some improvement. If your English is fine as is, read English newspapers and books, and write sample essays in English where you pick the topic. Ensure the topic concerns one of the issues listed in Step 2.
Practice your interviewing skills with a friend or family member once a week. Have the person ask you questions about your personal history and topics related to Indian affairs. Practice being as thoughtful, intelligent and articulate as you can be.
Enroll in an IAS preparatory class. These classes will break down each aspect of the exam and coach you on how to write the test successfully.
