How to Take the LPN Exam

The NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination-Practical Nursing) examination is a standardized test administered to practical nursing program graduates to assess and ensure sufficient knowledge and skills to work as a safe and competent entry-level practitioner. To qualify to take the exam, you must have successfully completed all nursing program requirements, including all didactic and practical studies. Programs with high pass rates on the NCLEX-PN include course content for safe and competent practice as well as specific information to prepare the student to pass the certification examination. Exam applicants are encouraged to study recommended NCLEX-PN test guides to "brush-up" prior to taking the exam.

      Contact your state nursing board by typing in your search engine "(state) state nursing board" and apply for licensure in your state. You will need verification from your college or vocational nursing program administrator that you have successfully completed all program requirements and are eligible to take the nursing certification exam, NCLEX-PN. Prior to taking the exam, you must receive confirmation from your state's nursing board that you meet eligibility requirements to take the exam.

      Contact the computer-based testing provider, Pearson VUE, to register and apply to take the NCLEX-PN. Pay for the examination and select a date and testing site that is convenient for you to take the exam. Take advantage of the resources available on the Pearson VUE website, including the online tutorial for the NCLEX. Prior to taking the exam, you must receive verification of registration and authorization to take the exam from Pearson VUE.

      Go to the exam site on the day and time you have scheduled to take the test. You must present a printed copy of authorization to test (ATT) from Pearson VUE and one form of acceptable identification. Take the test, as directed by the Pearson VUE testing administrator.

      Receive your NCLEX exam results from your state board of nursing within one month after you take the exam.
