How to Take the EA Exam

Attorneys and certified public accountants who wish to act as a representative for taxpayers in legal matters before the Internal Revenue Service must become an enrolled agent. To attain this status, the individual needs to successfully complete the EA exam. This test measures the professional's understanding of tax law, ensuring that she has the knowledge base necessary to successfully represent people in complex IRS-related matters. By signing up for and completing the exam, you can become an enrolled agent and help taxpayers navigate federal tax law.

      Sign up for the test. Visit the IRS Prometric site, listed in the Resources section. Register on this site, select a test date and schedule your test.

      Pay testing fees. There is a charge to take this exam. You must pay this fee when you register using a credit card. No cash or check payments are accepted. You will be prompted to enter your payment information as the last step of your registration process.

      Complete an accommodations request form. If you are eligible for accommodations under the American's with Disabilities Act, you can file an accommodations request form to ensure that you get the testing accommodations that you are entitled to by law. Complete this form at least two weeks in advance of your testing date to ensure that your accommodations can be arranged. To receive this form, contact Prometric using the link in the Resources section.

      Arrive at least 30 minutes in advance of the test. Prior to taking the test, you must complete the on-site registration process. Arrive at least a half an hour before the test to ensure that you have time to complete this registration prior to test time.

      Bring identification. You are required to prove your identity by bringing a valid driver's license, a government ID or a passport. If you do not bring one of these accepted documents, you will not be allowed to take the test.

      Reschedule your test if necessary. If you cannot keep your original testing appointment, visit the Prometric site to reschedule your exam. In most cases, you can reschedule free of charge.
