How to Take the TOEFL Exam

The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, is designed to measure the English proficiency of students for whom English is not a native language. It is commonly used for this purpose by universities in English-speaking countries such as the United States. Study and preparation will help you to do your best on the test, but it's also important to make sure you register in time and show up on test day with everything you need.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out whether you need to take the Internet-Based Test (iBT) or Paper-Based Test (PBT). Most TOEFL takers will take the iBT, but the PBT is still used in some places where iBT is not available.

    • 2

Choose a test date and test center that are convenient for you. There are 30 to 40 iBT dates per year, but far fewer PBT dates. Pick a date that gives you plenty of time to study and register.

    • 3

Register for your test. You can register online using the ETS website, by mail using a paper registration form or in person at some test centers. You can pay the registration fee with a credit card, a check or, in some cases, with cash. On your registration form, specify your preferred test date and the institutions you want your results sent to.

    • 4

When you go to the test center on your test date, take photo identification with you, such as a passport. You'll also need your registration confirmation and, if you're taking the PBT, pencils.
