How to Register for the ACT College Exam

The ACT is a standardized test that tests your knowledge of different subject areas. You can use your test score to apply for colleges. There are two ways to register for the ACT college exam--by mail or online. Online registration is convenient is your only option if you are registering to take the exam overseas. However, if you need special accommodations--such as more time for the exam due to a learning disability--you will need to register by mail.

Instructions

  1. Online

    • 1

Register for an online account with ACT at actstudent.org. The site will ask you for basic information, such as your name, Social Security number and birthday. You then create a username and password.

    • 2

      Enter your address. Click "Continue."

    • 3

Find your high school. Each high school has a specific code that you must use. If you know it, you can enter it. If not, search for your high school.

    • 4

Click on the "Register" button. You'll have to confirm the details you've given and answer a question about your citizenship.

    • 5

Answer questions about your high school and college plans. The registration process will then ask you questions about your high school experience, such as whether or not you are taking Advanced Placement classes and your grade point average. When you are finished, click "Continue." You'll also encounter questions about the type of college you plan to attend, what you want to study and the types of extracurricular activities you enjoy. Answering these questions is optional, but the company can use it to help connect you with a college that's right for you.

    • 6

Agree to the terms and conditions of taking the test. This restricts you to taking the test no more than 12 times and states that you may not continue filling in responses after the test proctor calls time.

    • 7

Choose your test date and test style. The ACT is only given on certain days. You have the option of taking the test with or without a writing section. You can also choose whether or not you want special study materials.

    • 8

Confirm your high school. It should be the high school that you attend. You can change it if it's incorrect.

    • 9

Enter your courses studied and grades. You have the opportunity to list whether you've taken a course, are taking a course or will take a course. You then enter your grades for each course.

    • 10

Specify where to send the scores. The ACT testing company will automatically send your scores to the colleges that you are applying for.

    • 11

Choose a testing center. Enter your Zip code to get a list of testing centers in your area.

    • 12

Pay for the test. Once you submit your payment, you are finished with registration.

    By Mail

    • 13

Request an application packet. Submit your information online to the ACT testing company. They will send you the application. You may also be able to get one from your high school guidance office.

    • 14

Fill out the forms. You'll need to enter personal information such as address and also information about your current schooling and future college plans.
