    • 1

Search the ETS website for test dates and locations. From the website's home page, select "GRE Tests." Here, you can read more about the GRE General Test and the GRE revised General Test. You can also search test dates and locations for both the paper-based and computer-based tests.

    • 2

Register for the test. Remember: According to the Educational Testing Services (ETS), you may take the GRE General Test only once per calendar month, and no more than five times within any 12-month period. Choose a date that precedes your graduate school application deadlines by at least 4 to 5 months. Doing so will leave you time to take the test again if you do not receive a satisfactory score the first time.

    • 3

Purchase a GRE Test Prep Book. Most books include a CD-ROM and access to additional online study material.

    • 4

Create and follow a study schedule. Be specific, assigning precise days and times to your GRE preparation. Study at least six days a week to work your way through an entire GRE Test Prep Book. Put vocabulary words and math formulas on flashcards. Carry the flashcards with you so that you can review them periodically throughout the day.

Practice taking full-length GRE tests at least one month prior to your official test date. According to The Official Guide to the GRE revised General Test, budgeting your time is one of the most effective test-taking strategies for either the paper-based or computer-based tests. You can practice time management skills by taking full-length tests prior to your scheduled test date.
