How to Take the Citizenship Test

The citizenship test is a necessary part of the naturalization process that almost all applicants will have to complete; the other steps include signing the appropriate paperwork, supplying the appropriate documentation and getting fingerprinted. You will need to attend a scheduled meeting before you can take the citizenship test; there, you will be asked questions from a range of subjects designed to gauge your knowledge of language and civics.

Download a copy of the Application for Naturalization (Form N-400). You can do this from the USCIS website or by telephoning to request a copy. Ensure you complete the form accurately and supply the necessary documentation, including two passport photographs. Include the application fee in one of the acceptable formats.

Get fingerprinted. As part of the naturalization process you will be required to have your fingerprints taken. You will receive an appointment telling you where and when this will take place.

    • 3

Attend your interview. You will receive an appointment --- and the USCIS places great importance on you attending this meeting promptly, so ensure you arrive on time. You will have received a list of the documentation you must bring to this, and it is your responsibility to make sure you have it with you.

Take the test. During your interview you will be tested on your verbal, written and spoken English skills. To pass, you will have to correctly write and read at least one of three sentences. (The official USCIS website explains the process in detail.) You will be assessed on your verbal skills during your interview. The final part of the test is the civics quiz, which you must pass with six correct answers out of 10.
