How to Take One Part of the GED Test

The General Educational Development exam is a high school equivalency exam given to Americans seeking an equivalent to the high school diploma. It is possible to take one part of the five-part GED Test, but only after you have taken the full exam first. If your scores are unsatisfactory, meaning they do not meet GED's minimum score per section or overall score, you can retake one or more of the sections in order to pass.

Instructions

    • 1

Register for, and take, the five-part GED Test. You must complete all five test sections, which include language arts, social studies, science and mathematics.

    • 2

Review all test scores to determine the section needs to be retaken. In general, no score on any one part can be below 410. An overall score of 2,250 must be reached to pass the GED. If one or more parts of the test scores are below 410, then you must retake that part.

    • 3

Review your state's GED testing regulations to verify whether you can retake the part, or parts, immediately, if you have to wait a certain amount of time, or if you need to take additional preparation courses first. Each state has different regulations for test-takers who do not pass the test the first time around. These regulations will determine when you can retake the individual parts.

    • 4

Prepare to retake the test by logging onto the GED test's website for materials (see References) or sign up to take a local or online prep course (see Resources). Having taken the exam already, you know the types of questions that will be asked and can work to improve on sections you were not confident in going into the test.
