How to Score the GED Test

Each state determines its own eligibility requirements for people interested in taking the GED test. States are also able to set the minimum passing score on GED tests. The scoring system, however, has a national standard and remains the same for every state. In 2002 the GED scoring methods changed. GED tests are now scored in two ways: points and percentile. The new scoring system allows for a maximum of 800 points. In percentile terms, the highest score possible on a GED is 99.

Calculate the points score on each of the five GED tests. Each test has a score ranging from 200 to 800. The minimum and maximum scores therefore are 1000 and 4000, respectively. To find the total score add all five of your test section score together. Divide the total score by five to find your average score.

Calculate the percentile rank for the GED. Percentiles range from 1 to 99 and show how your scores relate to others who have taken the test. If you score a 99 percent in one subject of the test, you have outperformed 99 percent of the test's control group: high school seniors. The percentile scores can be found on your GED score report sheet. Add all five percentile scores together and divide the sum by five to find your average percentile.

Check your state's laws to see if you passed the GED. All states require a score of at least 2250, however some states require a higher total score, or specific minimum average scores. To find your state's requirements go to the American Council on Education's website and click the state's GED administrators link.
