World-Renowned Photography Schools

Photography is considered by many to be an art form all on its own. There are many world-renowned colleges and universities that offer photography degrees or just classes for those thinking of getting started. While at least one world-renowned school is in the States, many are in Europe and only offer spots to a very select few students. However, should you choose to try and get into one of the European schools, it typically costs more for non-Europeans to go there due to transportation and accommodation costs.
  1. School of the Art Institute of Chicago

    • The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is affiliated with the Art Institute of Chicago and is known all over the world for having one of the best photography schools. It is credited as having the second-best photography program in the United States by the U.S. News & World Report. The school offers a bachelor's of fine arts degree for photography as well as graduate level degrees. Students at the Art Institute of Chicago get to experience galleries, shows and lectures at the adjacent Art Institute of Chicago Museum. Their Cooperative Education Program allows students to experience internships throughout Chicago and its surrounding cities.

    Gobelins

    • Gobelins has 11 international schools situated all over the world; including one in Los Angeles and one in the heart of Paris, France. The school focuses on the applied arts, print and digital media. Gobelins has over 700 students throughout all 11 locations that work and study as professionals in digital retouching, photography, media, publishing, illustrations and much more. Many of Gobelins' alumni have seen their work and successes showcased in festivals and events all over the world. This alone contributes to the school's international success and prestige.

    European Academy of Fine Arts

    • The European Academy of Fine Arts is situated in Germany but runs an English-speaking photography program in its Barcelona, Spain location. The school is very selective of the students it allows to study there, and only 12 students are admitted each year. Students are required to obtain their own materials, such as a high quality camera and a tripod, as well as pay for their own travel and accommodations. Classes include lessons on taking black and white photographs, technical knowledge and composition.

    Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts

    • The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts is located in Prague and is commonly known to its students as FAMU. The school offers a three-year bachelor degree in photography along with a two year master's program. To be admitted to the photography program, you must exhibit a clear talent for photography and producing creative work, and you must having a basic foundation of photography knowledge. Classes include Basic Photo Imaging and Studio Photography, and all classes are offered in English and the country's native Czech.
