Learning photography through a distance-learning school or an online training program can be a great option if you are looking to advance your knowledge in a specific area of photography, or pursuing a degree. Specific programs of study, certifications and courses will vary depending on the school you attend, yet most provide you with the flexibility to study and practice at your own pace, while adapting to your work schedules.
  1. Brooks Institute

    • Brooks Institute is a training school that offers degree programs and specific courses on photography, film, visual journalism and design. There are four main areas of photography in which students may specialize: advertising photography, commercial photography, photo-media photography and portraiture photography. These specializations can be used to pursue a bachelor of arts or master of fine arts degree. Specific training courses include fashion photography, stop-action photography, digital illustration and undersea photography. Requirements for admission include completion of high school studies or GED diploma.

    School of Photography

    • School of Photography is an online training school that offers various courses for beginners and intermediate students. There are two beginner courses available: creative photography and digital imaging. Both courses are presented in five modules and contain approximately thirty lessons. Subjects and concepts covered in these photography courses include: optical resolution, exposure controls, image and technical composition, combining shutter speeds with apertures, depth and field, focal length, rules of composition, lighting, patterns and textures, light and camera meter, image processing, and photoshop, among others. Additionally, there are alternative courses that focus on specific areas such as black-and-white photography, landscape photography, glamor photography, freelance photography and wedding photography. Admission is open to anyone.

    Open College of the Arts

    • Open College of the Arts is a distance-learning art school. It offers photography courses that can be taken individually or as credits to earn a Bachelor of

      Arts degree in photography. The courses are divided in three main levels: Photography level one includes the art of photography, digital photographic practice and people and place; Photography level two includes landscape, social documentary photography and progressing with digital photography; Photography level three consists of developing students' own portfolios, and covers techniques of advanced photography.

      Each course is divided in specific modules and a final project is due at the end of each module, where students apply the learned concepts and skills. According to OCA's faculty, the first two levels of photography in the B.A. program are intended to help students develop and explore the learned skills, and find a personal language or voice within their art.

    Icon Photography School

    • This online training school offers a photography course that consists of fourteen lessons, intended to give students a basic foundation to build a personal photographic portfolio. The lessons include the following courses: film, lenses and filters, color and color theory, basic photography composition, photography lighting, black and white photography, photographic styles, digital darkroom, photographic portfolio, inspiration from photography masters, and getting published. Students receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course. Icon Photography School has partnerships with various online art magazines and provides students the possibility of publishing their work. Admission is open to anyone.
