Praying Mantis Science Projects

A praying mantis is an insect known for its ability to change color and blend in with the environment. The praying mantis is carnivorous and is typically found in warm, temperate regions. Students can learn about entomology by working on an array of science projects involving the praying mantis.
  1. Praying Mantis Model

    • Show the students a diagram of the body parts of the praying mantis. Provide students with poster board, scissors and glue and ask them to create an accurate three-dimensional model of the praying mantis. Use this process to discuss the anatomy of the praying mantis.

    Natural Habitat Study

    • Take the students on a field trip to a location where the praying mantis is found. Ask students to observe and record how the praying mantis eats, lives and communicates. Have them photograph the praying mantis changing color in different environments. Use this project to discuss insect behavior.

    Digestive System Analysis

    • Ask students to research entomology books and draw an accurate diagram of the praying mantis' digestive system. Have them identify and describe the functions of all the parts of the digestive system. Ask them to write a report about the praying mantis' food sources and methods for obtaining their food.

    Life Cycle Analysis

    • Ask students to research and write a report on the life cycle of the praying mantis so they can understand the life stages. Ask them to provide information on praying mantis population control and optimal breeding grounds. Have them write a poem to introduce the praying mantis at the beginning of the report.
