Court Reporting Supplies

According to the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA), the average court reporting salary in August 2009 was $64,000. Like any business, reporting involves overhead. In addition a steno writer, computer equipment and software, most freelance reporters will be expected to purchase their own reporting-related supplies.
  1. Writer Supplies

    • Stenograph machines need to be kept in tip-top condition for optimum performance. Always keep on hand extra ribbons, a battery pack and an oil/maintenance kit for any unexpected adjustments.

    Transcripts

    • Transcript supplies consume a large portion of a reporter's budget. Transcript covers, three-hole punch paper, original transcript envelopes, mailing envelopes, CD envelopes and index/condensed tabs are necessary for transcript production.

    Media Storage

    • A bevy of blank CDs, 3 1/2-inch diskettes, memory cards and flash drives are needed for transcript storage and backup, untranslated stenograph machine notes, and litigation support.

    Organization

    • Accounting ledgers, a daily planner and DepoBooks or notebooks are needed to track income and expenses, calendar depositions, and organize captions, business cards and transcript requests.

    Miscellaneous

    • Printer cartridges, steno pads for paper writers, exhibit stickers, business cards, "confidential" and "original" stamps, a notary public stamp, invoices, and binder clips round out a reporter's supply list.
