Court Reporting Schools in Massachusetts

According to the United States Department of Labor, employment of court reporters is projected to grow by 18 percent through the year 2018. Court reporters record testimony during trials which requires specialized training.     • Boston-area residents interested in court reporting can train for a career at the New England Court Reporting Institute. Sessions are available Monday through Thursday, either during the day, evening and online. Coursework includes Introduction to Keyboarding, Legal Terminology, Medical Terminology and Voice Testimony. The classes range from 12 weeks (Medical Terminology) to 20 weeks (Legal Terminology). Graduates are required to type at a speed of 225 words per minute, pass final exams with a 95 percent accuracy rate and perform a one-week internship to receive a Certificate of Achievement in Court Reporting.

    Bryan College

    • Bryan College offers students in Massachusetts a degree from home via online training. The college is recognized by the National Court Reporters Association and is the oldest court reporter training school in the United States. Students in the year-long program take classes including Theory, Composition, General Psychology, Reporting Procedures and Legal Terminology. Graduates go on to take the Massachusetts State Court Reporting Licensing Examination. Bryan College offers financial aid as well as job placement assistance.

    • Massachusetts residents can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in court reporting via online study at the Court Reporting Institute. Students can attend full-time (an average of 26 hours per week) or part-time (13 hours per week). Coursework includes topics such as Court Reporting English, Speedbuilding, Principles of Speech, Physiology & Anatomy, Reporting Technology and Medical Terminology. Because courses are conducted online, the Court Reporting Institute requires students' computers to be equipped with speakers, Java, Flash, two USB ports, a printer, high-speed Internet connection and at least 40 gigabytes of hard drive space.
