Mississippi-Area Court Reporting Schools

To become a court reporter in Mississippi, you must have an associate's degree in court reporting or court reporting technology from an accredited school. The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) certifies court reporting programs, but it is not an accredited agency. Therefore it is not necessary to graduate from an NCRA-certified school to become a court reporter. There are only two colleges in Mississippi that offer court reporting degrees. However, Prince Institute in nearby Montgomery, Alabama, is accessible to Mississippi students who want a degree.
  1. Hinds Community College

    • Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi, has the only program in the state certified by the NCRA. This school offers programs for certified shorthand reporters (CSR) and registered professional reporters (RPR), among other court reporting professions. This two-year program awards an Associate of Applied Science in court reporting technology. Online and evening classes are available, and transfer credits from other institutions are permitted. Hinds Community College also provides a free job placement service for graduates.

    Prince Institute

    • This school focuses entirely on real-time reporting, which includes court/judicial reporting, webcasting, captioning and communication access real-time translation (CART). The institute offers the option to take all courses online, which makes it accessible for Mississippi residents who do not want to travel out of state. Graduates are awarded an associate's degree in real-time reporting with a concentration in judicial reporting or an associate's in real-time reporting with a concentration in CART captioning. Both of these degrees can be completed within two years. The school is NCRA-certified and approved by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).
