    • Erwin Technical Center is located just north of downtown Tampa on E. Hillsborough Ave. Erwin is one of only a few technical schools in Tampa that offer course schedules in automotive technology, along with its other education programs. Erwin’s automotive technology program prepares students to become auto mechanics. In the program, students work in a computer managed laboratory and perform hands-on work on automobiles. Student learn every aspect of repairing automobiles including brakes, suspension and steering, engine performance and repair, automatic and manual transmissions, drivelines, electrical systems, and air conditioning systems. The program is 19 months long (1800 clock hours) and is only offered in the daytime between the hours of 8am to 2pm. Admission into the program requires completion of the TABE assessment test with at least a 10th grade level in reading, math, and language. To enroll, the applicant must pay a $3 test fee and a $10 non-refundable application fee. Tuition for in-states students is $981.00 every 18 weeks (which is one term) and $3919.50 (every 18 weeks) for out of state students. The total cost of the automotive technology program (for in-state students) including tuition, start-up costs, books, supplies fees and insurance is $7,471.00. Students need to be prepared to pay $2,605.00 in start-up costs before they are able to begin the program. Erwin offers financial aid to eligible students as well as job placement assistance.

    Brewster Technical School

    • Brewster Technical School is located in the downtown area of Tampa. Brewster is another one of the few technical schools in Tampa that offers a training program in automotive technology. According to the official website, Brewster’s goal of its automotive program is to train students how to diagnose, service and maintain automotive products using recommended procedures, special tools and service publications. Also, to provide course content that will help students advance in their new career. The program is 19 months long (1800 clock hours) and is only offered in the daytime between the hours of 8am to 2pm. Admission into the program requires completion of the TABE assessment test with at least a 10th grade level in reading, math, and language. The test is free to take at Brewster Wednesday mornings and Thursday evenings. The total cost of the program is $7325.00. Brewster offers financial aid to students who qualify.

    Hillsborough Community College ?

    • Hillsborough Community College ?offers a comprehensive automotive service technology program. HCC has several campuses located in different parts of Tampa, but the automotive technology program is offered only at the Dale Mabry campus, which is located directly across the street from Raymond James Stadium near Tampa International Airport. HCC’s automotive technology program requires completion of 1800 clock hours. Generally, it takes up to 19 months to complete the program; however, some students have the ability to finish sooner. Twelve classes total must be completed, including: engine repair, automatic and manual transmission, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical systems, and air conditioning among other classes. To apply, there is a $20 application fee, and students must take a college competency test before being admitted into the program. Tuition cost for in-state and out-of-state students is $60.17 per credit hour. Each class is five credit hours, and supplies will be needed for each class. HCC offers financial aid to students who qualify.
