How to Prepare for Virginia GED Testing

When a person is unable to finish high school, he will need to complete a GED to be able to enroll in college courses. A GED is a General Educational Development exam, and it is available in every state. Each state has its own rules about who is eligible to take the exam. For example, one state may allow 16-year-old homeschoolers to take the exam, while another may not. If you plan on taking your GED test in Virginia, determine whether you're eligible and take steps to prepare for it.

Check to see if you are eligible to take the GED test. All individuals 18 years of age or older are automatically eligible in Virginia. If you are between the ages of 16 and 17, you will need to call Virginia's GED helpline to determine if your particular situation qualifies you to take the exam.

Sign up for a GED class in your area. The website Virginia GED (see Resources) has a class locator you can use to find a class in your county. Select your county from the drop-down menu and available classes will show up on your screen. Take the classes to prepare for the GED test.

Watch a GED class online. PBS offers this service. Visit the website Literacy Link (see Resources) to find out which channel PBS is in your Virginia county. From the website, you can also click to find out the TV schedule to determine what times the GED classes air.

Take a practice test before taking the real GED test. You can do this online at the Steck Vaughn Adult Education website (see Resources). The results will show you which areas, if any, need further study before you take the real GED exam.
