Not just anyone can walk in and take the Texas GED. You must be a Texas resident. You must be withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least six months. Of course, you must not have a high school diploma. There are age restrictions, but they vary. Before you register, complete a GED Demographic Form and an online GED Registration Card Form. Decide where you want to take the test, and email, fax or submit your form in person. (Find your test location here: http://bass.tea.state.tx.us/Tea.GEDi.Web/Forms/TestCenters.aspx)
Registration must be completed at any Texas official testing center. Fees vary, so check with your local testing center for actual charges. Credit cards are not accepted, so bring cash, a check, money order or voucher. Bring ID with your social security number and proof of residence.
Consider taking a class. You don't have to pay a lot of money. There are free classes available on the Internet. Check local Adult Education Programs for classes. Getting back in the school routine of things is tough, so it might be a good idea for you to consider a tutor. Find a tutor or friend who can help you make flashcards, make outlines and teach you test-taking techniques. If you can't find a free tutor and can't afford to pay for one, ask the librarian for a book about study skills and review it.
Start studying on your own. Use the resources you created with your tutor or in your classes. Carve out at least an hour a day and review the information. A week before the test, take a practice test. Type "Practice Test" in to any search engine and you will find free, online tests. After scoring your test you will probably gain confidence in your abilities and learn if you have any weaknesses.
On the day of the test, show up about fifteen minutes early so you don't have to stress about parking or traffic. Wear comfortable clothing, but skip the perfume or cologne out of respect for fellow test takers.
Have either a state-issued driver's license, ID card, military ID, passport, correctional facility or government ID. You must use the same one you did to register. You've prepared, now get ready to do well.
